I have now tried to cut my scraps as I go, when I finish a project, I cut up my scraps and put the in bucket by size. I have from 1 1/2" squares to 5" squares, some 10".

When my fabric is ironed I cut pieces for blocks/quilts/swaps then I cut & store the manufacturers mark; 1-2" strips for string quilts; 2.5" strips for swapping; cut odd pieces into 1.5, 2, & 2.5" squares; & reserve small crumbs for SPCA dog beds. I place each group into a marked box as flat as I can so I don't have to iron again. I keep a box under my longarm to catch crumbs, and fill as I go into the marked boxes. I gift some of the squares during the year to enhance a swap I join or host. The prepared & stored items have certainly come into play for most of my swaps.
