I have buttons that I will be putting on a jacket, but they can not go through the washer. Does anyone know of any kind of fasteners that can be easily put them on and off with? I was hoping there would be some kind of safety pin type fastener, but couldn't find such a thing in the stores. Thank you for your help.

Make another buttonhole where you will be attaching the buttons...BUT make it the size of the small flat button that you will attach to the back of the fancy button. This way it is removeable for washing.

Thank you both. I did forget to mention that there is not shank. But you did give me great ideas. Thank you so much!

Sewing a second button to each button with a heavy duty thread and putting a second button hole in the inside flap of the front is the best way to go. Think of cuff links when you do this and you'll get it just fine.

Thank you Alleyoop1! That is just what I ended up doing. Here are some pictures.

Thank you all for your help. I love this board for that--everyone is so helpful and there are tons of great ideas!

Buttons on the inside (I still have to cut threads!)

If you do not absolutely LOVE the buttons on the jacket now, simply get some fabulous ones and replace them. I know darn well that at some point in time, I will lose one and only one of any set of unmatchable buttons I have to remove each washing.
