Eddie, they will absolutely love "Leather Diamonds." That is a fitting name for a gorgeous quilt. Will you be able to borrow the quilts back to take to your presentation at the State Guild Mtg? Get Melissa to make a video of you giving the presentation (if it doesn't make yo too nervous). We all wanna see. We're all so proud of you and all you accomplishments. Ask QNC aka Mousie if she can tell us how to shrink down to her size & go peak in from a corner at that meeting. Our little chins would be on the floor in awe. Keep up the great work & so glad you're being recognized for your dedication for all this fabulous work (not work when you love what you do).

It's actually a VERY easy quilt to make. As I said in the initial post, this is one of several Christmas gift quilts that I need to make, so I needed something that was going to be fast and easy. This is actually the second time I've used this pattern for a quilt.

If you look at the quilt (I posted the pic again below for easy reference), you'll notice the main block pattern is 4 x 5 blocks, so there are 20 blocks. Also, notice that each block has 4 dark triangles (the diamond) and 4 light triangles surrounding the diamond. So, each of the 20 blocks is simply 4 smaller half-square triangle blocks that have been sewn together.

Since I was using a layer cake (40 layers of fabric that are 10" x 10" each), I wanted to use the material as frugally as possible (i.e., all of it -- there was ZERO waste from this layer cake and no pieces left over), so here is what I did. I separated the material into two stacks of lights and darks, 20 layers each. I then took a layer from each stack (a light and a dark) and layered them with right sides together. I then sewed around all 4 edges of the two pieces using a 1/4 seam. Next, I used a ruler and rotary cut across the two pieces diagonally from corner to corner (i.e., 2 cuts). When opened up, you now have 4 half-square triangles, each of which has a dark and a light side. I then oriented them so that the darks formed a diamond in the middle of the 4 mini-blocks making up the larger block.

I really like this method of making HSTs, it seems a lot easier and faster than the conventional method I've seen of drawing a diagonal line across the block and sewing 1/4" on both sides of it and then cutting on the drawn line.

Thanks so very much, your way sounds like a much easier way of making half square triangles. I have a layer cake from Moda for quiet some time and never could find a pattern that struck my fancy till I saw yours.

I a truly greatfull.
