If I were making a quilt to hang in a shed where cars are worked on, I would want it to be under glass as in a poster frame or maybe a frame a little deeper than that to accommodate the layers. Just something to consider.

It seems 16 blocks would be appropriate for a quilt that hangs near a pool table.

Did you ask your son how big he wants it? Like how big is the wall area etc. Just a thought.
