Yes, I love the smiling faces. When I gave the mother her purse, she joked that her darling would fight her for it. My DH immediately said I'd make a second for the 4 year old, as he knows I love to make kids happy.
My friend complemented the purse, so I decided to make her one.
someone on another board did a table runner. It started in the center with an on-point square, with French braids going either direction from there. you could add interfacing if you like a stiffer bag. My purse pattern is based on that idea, with measurements being what I like in a purse. Except for the original square, it is all quilt as you go. The flap has a pointy end, the other side is cut off square. On this purse, I cut the pointy edge so there would be 2 corners for fasteners, being careful to keep the flap long enough to go past the inside pocket. I then added a strip of fabric for pockets on the inside.
I folded fabric around a double thickness of batting, quilting that. Mine was a WOF strip, the others I made were longer or shorter, depending on the wishes of the people I made them for. I sewed folded the purse and sewed front and back together along the sides, then whipped the edges. Then I made a grocery sack fold so there is a distinct bottom. I put binding around the upper edge. Then I added the strap and a short loop to hold a carabiner, to keep keys handy. I was afraid this loop would wear out too fast, but it has not.
