The way I do the boarders so they match on front and back is cut the boarders twice the size as I need. Sew one edge with a 1/4" seam so I can have that as a reference to fold under when sewing the back boarder. Then I sew the boarders on like normal. Opps! Forgot one step. I first iron the boarder in half, so I have a good crease to line up the batting with. Then I sew it on the front side, just like you would normally do the outside boarder.

Now, layer the backing material on your batting and baste it in place. The nice thing about doing it this way is that since the quilt is only 48" wide, I can use just one piece of fabric for the backing. It doesn't cover the whole back because the boarder is wide enough so it doesn't have to. I do hand baste the otuside edges of the fabric backing in place so that it doesn't move or roll after it's done.

Next, layer the quilt as you normally would butting the batting up to the crease you made in the outside boarder. Then you quilt or in my case I tied the quilt and only stitched around both sides of the first boarder and then the inside seam of the outside boarder. This gives you a good line to sew your back side boarder to. Then I turn the whole thing to the back side and fold the corners so they are mitered. Then hand stitch like any other binding you put on. It's the simplest way I know of the finishing off a quilt.

I love that you tie your quilts. Do you do any quilting, or are they just tied? I like to tie mine also. It gives me a warm "grandma" feeling to have a tied quilt on my bed.

I do stitch in the ditch on the boarders but for the most part I just tie them. I want to learn to machine free motion quilt but I just don't seem to find the time as I have so much to get done before Christmas and these side jobs are kicking my buttock.LOL I still have 5 fleece blankets with appliqued pillow cases (1 Redskins, 2 Dallas, 2 Steeler's) to do and havn't even started making my pattern for them yet. Also, I really want to do a nice big one, like a queen size for one of my brothers because he love quilts so much. He goes to lots of shows just to drool over them. He will call me and talk about how nice they are but then says how he could never afford to buy one. So his is a must do for me. He lives in Maine so I want to make it nice and warm to. Might make it with a wool batting, not sure yet because I have never worked with wool. It makes me itch to much. LOL

Oh yea, rest will come but not until after the New Year! Then I'm going into hiding for a while. LOL
