I thought I'd share this quilt with everyone. It was fun to make. My daughter is a 4th grade teacher. She wanted to do something fun with her class. She had them draw and color in a picture of themselves with permanent fabric markers on a square of fabric. She then turned the squares over to me. I had seen a photo of something similar in an old Oriental Trading Co. catalog and this is my version. The quilt was on display in the school office for a few months until May 2009, at which time it was taken down. Each child was able to present their square to their Mom's on Mother's Day. From what I understand, there were a few tears from some of those Mom's.
    Hope you like it!

What a great idea and such a thoughtful way to give their Mom's something on their special day that they'll treasure forever.

I really think this is a great idea. Everyone gets to take their block home but they still get to show off the whole project.

    What a wonderful quilt.

You are one clever quilter. I love the idea of the "quilt" displayed as one quilt but then can be "taken apart" so each child takes their special square home to mom and dad!

It's activities like this that kids remember for a lifetime not the paper and pencil activities they have to do continually it seems with today's curriculum.

What a lovely idea!! How I wish I had known about this when I did the 5th grade quilts. We did redwork. They designed their blocks (one year, they did scenes of colonial life [from their American History unit]; another year they did flowers from their science unit; and yet another year, we discussed different quilt blocks. They chose a block to draw and color using Crayola crayons. Then they made pillows. For the embroidery we were amazed how those kids did nice needlework. Even the big guys were very good. And the stitching for the pillows was well done. This would have been an awesome thing for them to take home.

I just love that the quilt comes apart and each child gets to keep a square. Great idea.
