I have been asked by a friend to make a baby quilt for a first grandchild- the baby (a girl) is due in May - anyway I made this really pretty top - but I am not sure its appropriate for day to day use - its all washable but I am thinking of adding a flannel quilt for day to day use. So, I guess this quilt will be an heirloom - what do you think ?

I think it is very pretty and I would use it every day. If you feel like this might be "extra special" then make another one of flannel and include a note so they understand your intention.

As for me, this is too pretty to be stored away as an heirloom. I would want it loved.

Anything you make the baby will be "extra special". If it is your grand baby--make 2 or 3 or whatever you are in the mood to do. It is a baby and all is blessed!

i think your quilt is beautiful, but not a baby quilt, a baby quilt should be usable, washable, drag everywhere- take in the car, toss on the floor...so, i'd figure the first one is the heirloom...now how 'bout a 'real' baby quilt :)...
wow, it is beautiful!

I really want the quilt to be used also - I don't believe in keeping them stored away. I was just referring to the colors (white)- although everything is cotton - This is not for my grandchild - it is a friend paying me for a quilt - I just want it to be special for them.

That is so pretty the mom probably won't want it used on the floor. On the other hand, I have made some really pretty quilts for babies and told the moms to use them. I make them all washable and easy care.

I love it! As others told me when I asked, this is one that could "grow" with the child.
Send you friend a picture to see what she thinks before you quilt it.

Gorgeous looking quilt! It is stunning! I think that a quilt is meant to be a treasured item to grow with a person be it a child or a grown up. I guess it all depends on how you feel for a quilt as beautiful as this one, to be used and dragged about. If the thought does not appeal then perhaps a purpose made baby quilt would be more appropriate. Love this quilt! It is stunning!

This is a beautiful quilt and very pretty for a baby girl. It will be well used and washed as a baby quilt, so maybe you should put a hanging sleeve on it to decorate the wall, and go with your idea of making a simpler one for everyday use. I wouldn't put it away - it should be enjoyed!
