    Lori, maybe this only happens to me - It's when your pieced elements don't line up correctly and and your stitch in the ditch seam kinda has to make a detour because the 'ditch' isn't a straight line. I call it a dog leg. I learned that a patterned background is a good idea when you're a beginner, so those little detours aren't really visible.
