If the mom is happy with it, then leave it alone!
Now if you just can't stand to do that, you could probably just undo that section and redo it.

It's got a significant "twin" effect to it; most twins at some point reach out for one another, some never wanting to not be touching the other - this quilt is reaching out to the other - just a wonderful opps in this case in my way of looking at it.

I would have to fix it also. You can make the section and then applique it over the bad section then quilt and no one would be the wiser. It is simpler to applique over it than to try to rip it out. I had to do that on one of my quilts and it looked perfect.

I suppose by now they are gifted, but am wondering if you could maybe get them back and embroider their names on them, with one's name in the center and the other's name in the side area? Just a thought as I looked at them again. Would add a personal touch.

Life is way too short to fret over this! Both quilts are great and in the colors the mom wanted. We all make mistakes and quite honestly I believe they happen to keep us on our toes. With that, I would put that pic in my sewing room as a reminder to take a picture before I go to the quilting step. If it truly is an issue with you, I would appliqué Winnie, a honey pot or even a large bee on both of them.
