Default Batik Hearts

I won a nice selection of batik vendor samples at a shop hop. I have gotten quite a few things out of the fabric, including this quilt in progress. I made machine embroidery applique for the hearts. I like that the heart is usually made with soft colors, but, I thought the batik fabric worked in a different way. I cut the squares at 5 1/2 inches and added 2 inch borders in a variety of colors. I read somewhere that if you put the lighter colors in the center, it makes them glow, not sure yet if that is the case. It is on my design wall while I think about what to do next.

Wonderful! How did you create the edging right next to the hearts?

It is machine embroidery with applique. The fabric is stretched on a hoop with stabilizer underneath. The hoop attaches to my Janome embroidery machine. The machines stitches out a heart shape and I cut top thread and lay batik fabric so it covers heart. The machine stitches the heart shape again, basting the fabric. I the. Remove hoop and trim fabric outside heart shape and attach hoop to machine. The machine then outlines edge with zig zags, which cover all raw edges. The satin stitching is done and finally, the accent stitching. The machine stitches this heart design in less than 10 minutes. I remove from hoop and tear away the stabilizer from the back. Square it off and you're done.
