Bunkhouse Quilt
This is a quilt made for Slim, the hired hand. It is long and narrow (notice in the picture that the quilt is folded over at the top) and made to fit on a cot or single bed pushed up against the wall. Cowboy quilts must be narrow, so that the bedroll fits behind them on the horse. Another requirement for a bunkhouse quilt is that it is made from whatever is on hand. At a garage sale I found a partially finished French braid quilt top that I took apart, and the panels are used here. I think Slim will enjoy the wilderness animals that form the other panels. The backing is an "old lady floral" print that I had in the closet. I have enough left of that for the backing of the quilt I am making for Tex.
I hope Slim likes his quilt. If not, it will go to the Bible Camp quilt auction. Some grandma will bid on it for her little buckaroo.

Function dictated what you needed - and the desire to make in the customary fashion by incorporating the French Braid strips continued a tradition ... what is the most wonderful part of the quilt is that you added the special fabrics which will make it unique and the borders which pull it all together. May it serve well, and last a long long time!

Thank you for sharing the tradition on how real cowboy quilts are made; I found that fascinating! And since Slim is a real cowboy, I'm sure he'll love & appreciate it!
