That was my thought also. Cheese cloth with stiffiner and threads.

Your grandmother? Hey, I still do that! My mother trained me- she grew up during the war when they had rationing and you couldnt be sure you would be able to source a button when you needed it. She saves zippers too, but I draw the line at that!
