Awww shucks, thanks everyone for all the nice comments. I love the "American Hero" block as well. If I can find just the right fabric for the sashing, I think I'll probably end up making an "American Hero" quilt.

I was having a bit of trouble with the pivoting aspect so I converted the paper-pieced pattern into an applique pattern and this is how they turned out.
