Thanks. The bird hanging was machine appliqued. I used Renee's designs so the decorative stitch you see is the stitch she digitized. Her design collection is called "Holiday Birdies" and is available at www.embroiderygarden.com

Most embroidery machine applique designs are digitized with a satin stitch on the outer edges. The Holiday Birdies have such a pretty decorative stitch that make them extra special.

I encourage any one to give machine applique a try. If you have an embroidery machine, it is particularly easy, but even with a sewing machine you can get wonderful results. I have done both. With my sewing machine I have used the blanket stitch with good results, but now that you mention decorative stitching, I need to experiment with some of my built-in stitches. I would think that any of the decorative stitches that stitch forward (not backwards and forward) would work. Thank you for the idea.
