i'm using a smaller table that we used to have in our kitchen. if you look closely, you can see the black bed risers under each leg. i love the height! sometimes i wish it were a little bigger, but there's no room right now (i've rearranged and added some other tables for machine quilting since i took this picture). then i made the table skirt so i could 'hide' stuff under it!

craigslist is a great place to find tables reasonably!

I've read that the best height for a cutting table is about 3" shorter than your elbow height. I've 6 of the pattern cabinets, 3 back to back with the other 3, and then a 2 piece counter top. The height makes it perfect for me, and the cabinets give me storage, although not enough.LOL

This is my newest cutting table. I still use the dining room table for big length of fabric cuts. It is an old fashioned drafting table and I love that the top is elevated so I am not craning my neck to cut anymore. I can lower it all the way flat if need be.

About 1/3 of the table has thick butcher block that stays flat and fits my backup sewing machine.

I bought a cutting table from Nancy's Notions online. It folds down to store a way in a very small space. It had castors on it and came with an ironing cover and a scrap basket. It is also taller. I'd post a pic but my camera is dead. I'll get it charged up and see if I can add it here.

That looks like the ideal sewing room,however mine has to double as a guest / computer room.My husband mde me a fold up table,so it goes back against the wall when the room is a bedroom,I disguise it with a walhanging. When the legs fold down it's the perfect height to stop my back from trouble.I store all my fat quarter in wheeled four and five drawer cabinets so they can be easily moved out -- usually to our bedroom.Other fabric is under our bed ,in a chest and on the floor of all the wardrobes !!! My friends laugh when they see how many hiding places I have.The back of bookcases and under couches are great for cutting boards.greetings to you all. Letty

My DS made me one this summer. He took a ¾ inch piece of plywood, cut it down to 3 x 6 feet, attached folding legs (from the Home Depot). He reinforced the edges with 1 x 3 inch pieces along the sides. Then I covered it with low loft batting and stripped fabric from WalMart. This way, it is both a cutting table and an ironing table. The stripped fabric makes it easier to line up your strips or pieces. I also added 1inch PVC pipes to the four legs to bring it up to my height. (I’m 5’6”)

He also did the same thing for a sewing table for me (also in picture). He cut out a space and built a shelf so both my sewing machines will fit in it. He also glued a ¼ inch piece of some kind of laminate on top so it is very smooth. I plan to iron an edge strip on the front of the table so my material will glide over the edge better. The sewing machine in the picture is my 41 year old New Home (old name for Janome???). It is a workhorse, but doesn’t do any of the quilting stitches.

I am sure I paid less than $100 for both tables.

He also made me a design wall. We took a piece of "sound board" (from Home Depot), reinforced it with 1x2 inch strips in an X pattern and around all four sides. Then I covered it with a piece of WalMart polyester batting. The batting holds the material up well enough, but for anything heavier, you can just put a pin in it. As you can see from this picture, it is holding up my almost-finished quilt for same DS. (Aren't I a lucky Mom?) :D

you are a lucky mom! can you tell me what the 1 X 3 strips were made of?
