My hubby asked for an "Indian" quilt. I came up with this. I'm thinking about trying "again" to machine quilt. Should I? I'm a very experienced hand quilter but have not had success with machine quilting. I have drawn a swirly-type pattern for the white but am stumped as to what to do with the bird. Thinking about plain in-the-ditch. I know there are lots of suggestions out there. Thanks.

go for it. Think your idea of swirly in the white would soften that area while in the ditch would highlight the "Thunderbird?"

My, that is gorgeous! I love the colors. I'm a hand quilter too but now learning to long arm quilt. What about making a template and putting some arrowhead shapes on the eagle? Can't wait to see what you decide to do. Please post again when it's all finished?!!

This is beautiful and I think your plan for the white area is great. There is a technique called "continuous curve" that might work for the eagle. It's easy and fairly fast and can be done on a longarm or on a regular machine. There is a Youtube video that gives general instructions if you google continuous curve quilting.

That's what I was thinking but not sure I like in-the-ditch stitch.

I would do a straight stitch on the diagonal. That is popular machine stitch these days and is easy to do with the walking foot that comes with the quilter. Very nice quilt!

I love your quilt top. I would try to do a diagonal curve from one upper corner to the opposite bottom corner to give it a look like the bird has feathers (not the regular feather design you see on many quilts).

    Thanks,

Well, I chickened out (again) on maching quilting. I think I will just do what I know - I will be hand quilting it. :)
    Thanks for the ideas.
