If you are not confident, why not just do straight line stitching through the corners of each square so that you have a diagonal or lattice pattern if you go the other way as well. Sometimes less is more.

What a lovely design. Swirly in the white sounds good, maybe diagonals within the thunderbird? Whatever you do it will be stunning. TFS
