don't use yellow chalk - I did once & it didn't come out.

there are no guarantees...always test what you want to use. and test on a whole sandwich...what ever your top, bottom and batting is....make a small sandwich, mark a couple inches...wash it ...check to see that it came out completely...make sure it did not just migrate through the batting to show on the stiches on the back...and even if you used this pencil fine and it washed out...that does not mean it will wash out of the next one...always test.
i use chalk most often and a regular #2 pencil when the chalk isn't the answere...i have ruined beautiful quilts trying a marker someone recommended...said she always used it...well it did not wash out of my quilt...and a colored pencil a friend always uses...ruined another...yup...i didn't learn with the first one, i tried someone elses recommendation with out testing myself on my project...after the second one i learned...now i test every time...every fabric is different; every quilt is different. try different things but always test

Try that marking chalk that comes in the little plastic tube with a tip on it...I think it's called Chaco Liner. I've heard that works well on dark fabrics.

I've had good results with Sewline pencils - they do white 'leads' and yellow ones too. They sell erasers that remove the marks.

Jean Brown (the Aunt Becky quilt lady) uses the silver marking pencil for quilts. She says that it washes out. Have not tried it myself.

A soap sliver would work. for cross hatching, use the blue masking tape.
