I really just winged it on the table mat. I drew a circle using a pizza pan then folded it to make the octagon. I made the strips around it 1 1/2, 2, and 2 1/2. Sewed the strips around it however I thought looked good. You can put several small ones or less larger, just play with it. The finished size on it is about 24 inches diameter. Also depends on size of the octagon you start with.
