I mostly used a hoop, although I did try quilting without a hoop. That did not work well for me. I like that I can turn the hoop and quilt in any direction. I have tried quilting a little on a frame and it was much harder for me.

I tried a few different hoops, too, and found the best is a lap hoop that sets the work up about 6 inches from my lap. Just a plain hoop with no base came in 2nd, and a lap hoop that was about 8 inches high gave me a crick in my shoulder.

Thanks! I use masking tape to mark my stitching lines. Makes it easy to keep them straight, although if you accidently sew into the tape, the gummy needle is a pain.
