I made the same one, but made a cover for it out of striped fabric so I can iron things straight.

You should see my mini ironing board. I was making a table topper, so sewed right sides together and turned it right sides out. Then I realized it would be so much easier to turn the edges sharply if I could iron those seams first.
I had opened a seam on the front to turn it, so I made a little ironing board to slip inside to help with the ironing. I had a piece of Masonite about 3 inches by 6 inches. I put a piece of batting on both sides. Then I wrapped a cover: (a pocket of muslin sewn on two sides)around that. I sewed the other two sides and left the seam allowances loose.
When the little ironing board was inside, I passed it around each side so I could iron all those seams. They were much easier to turn neatly. When I was finished ironing the little ironing board came out the hole it went in and the hole was carefully closed.

In the interval before making another cover, perhaps you would like using a flat piece of material. I bound the edges with bia tape for each of two protective covers used for my homemade big board and smaller pressing surface. A heavy twill cotton is the same fabric I used for the original surface. My original cover remains neat and clean. The protective covers are easily laundered so any bleed through of fabric dye is easily removed.
