One really good hint to help loosen up your movement is to practice by doodling on paper to get the flow going.

DOODLE? I doodle all the time especially when on the phone! If my doodling is connected to FMQ, then I should be good! LOL :)

Looking great, wow! I'm just starting to practice, too. My feeling is, it's probably better to have shortish stitches than too long ones. Don't want any toe catchers in there.
For speed, I've seen someone recommend to put a phonebook in front of the foot pedal, to to rest your heel on. I do that now (with a piece of non-slip shelf lining underneath to keep book and pedal from sliding away from me...), and it makes it MUCH easier on my foot to sew at slower and medium speeds.

Keep practicing. I have been trying it and oh my. Some bigger stitches some smaller some just right. I even did it on the monthly doll quilt swap and didn't like it so made a new quilt.
Hang in there.
Hang in there.
