It's hard for us to see how dark/light it is ... the top left the blocks look like the flash has overbrightened them ... and I am suspecting the bottom right is darker than IRL. The best way for you to get some ideas for the block placement and borders would be to look at other OBWs and see what you like about them. Take note how they have the colours flowing ... you don't want them going in straight lines, more so in swirls or curves. At least that's what I like ... and others may have different ways they like to see it.

Likewise for the borders. There's countless ways that people have finished off their OBWs that are very creative and you could draw on for yours.

Border colours ... I see gold, green and blue as being the first ones I'd audition. Some of that might depend on if you have enough of the uncut fabric to use in your borders or not. If not, I'd probably work with the black or dark brown along with the colours I mentioned.

I'm really liking the look of your quilt! Considering it's for a cottage, I think the colours are appropriate. How about lightening it up with some blue, maybe representing the lake? Keep going!

oooohhhhhhhh, I like it!!! I have a piece of deer material I couldn't figure just what to do with and I think you just solved my question. Looks great so far, keep us posted as you progress!!!

I would leave it in those colours.
I think, as does QuiltE, that if you don't like the finished blocks when done sash and or border them with light or bright.
So far I think you might be surprised as they look great

I know that when I made my first OBW the blocks were up on the design wall for well over a month until I felt that the the placement worked. I ended up not using some of the blocks as they just did not "work". Those blocks ended up in a pieced backing. Lesson, you don't have to use all of the hexagon blocks. I also played with the borders so that the colors pulled from the colors in the blocks.
