The pattern appears to be a version of 54-40 or Fight. It's drafted on a Nine Patch base: The corners are four patches, the center a square, and the other four patches are squares divided into two rectangles and each rectangle divided into two long triangles. Clear as mud?

looking at the quilt it is easy to reverse engineer the pattern. basically you are right it is 4 patch blocks in the corners, a center square and the other blocks are 2 rectangles sewn together with long triangles sewn to the bottom corners of these rectangle units. the sashing has crown royal cornerstone blocks. the finished block size looks to be about 9". once you draw up templates for the triangle cuts and the rectangles, the rest should be pretty easy to cut. the 4 patch blocks can be made using strip piecing.
