What do you mean fold the material back, that it's not really curved piecing? Can you elaborate?

Fold a background square diagonally with the wrong sides together. Place this folded triangle on top of a colored square.
Machine baste along the two outside edges. After you have pieced your block together, roll back the folded edge of the background triangle and topstitch it down to make the curve. It is really fun to do. Please PM me if interested in the pattern.
