Yes, it is done by hand. I have often tried free motion, and am not confident or good with it AT ALL. I need lots of practice!! After the piecing turned out as well as it did I didn't want to ruin a good thing with bad machine quilting. So, I stitched away each evening while watching TV. It took several months, but I'm really glad I did it that way. That whole quilt was a "learn as you go" project--clear to the scallops. It was really fun.
