I have seen multiple comments about seperate categories for handquilted quilts at quilt shows. Am I the only dinosaur here that remembers when machine quilters campaigned for seperate categories for machine quilted quilts? They felt like they didn't stand a snowball's chance of winning if the competition were all handquilted. Things have a way of going full circle.

I really admire hand quilters, I would love to hand quilt one of mine someday, but I am very intimidated.

I do agree with you that shows should have separate sections for machine and hand quilted peices. They are two different art forms in my opinion. Both have different techniques.

I don't think one is better than the other though, bit like chalk and cheese :D

Hand quilting is, indeed, an art form in and of itself. Should be judged separately.

As a hand quilter, I am stunned by your work. It would take me years and years and years to do any ONE of those pictured. For my personal quilts or those for my family, I hand quilt. For chairty quilts, I always do SID because I need to do fast turn around.

Most of my hand quilting is straight line or one or two lines of echo. Maybe I'm just not fast enough. I couldn't do that much hand quilting on one quilt in 5 years time. You're definitely faster (not even mentioning better) than me. Your work is breathtaking!!!

Like I mentioned, I don't care for hand quilting, but I'd never make snarky comments about it.
My sentiments exactly. There is a lot of quilt snobbery out there, and I don't mean just about hand vs. machine sewing. It is obvious in some of the letters to the editors of quilt magazines. I love quilts--all quilts--and I really don't care whether they're done by machine or by hand. What matters is the care and artistry, not the method. I work with a long arm quilter whose work is superb, original, and beautiful. I would stack her quilts up against any hand quilter, any day. Machine quilting can be done artistically. Hand quilting is not necessarily art. It's all in the eye of the beholder.

I agree with you. I like to hand quilt because it relaxes me and keeps me sane, but if I ever get to the point where I can't do it anymore, I'd be more than happy to jump over to the machine. In fact, the times I have machine quilted it's been tons of fun.

I just looked at your blog, and the header looks exactly like Pete, my cat! It's wonderful!
