I think we all keep seeing the one fabric with the black----it seems distracting because all of the other colors are just so lovely together--Sometimes the best thing to do is put it away for awhile and look at it "fresh" in a few days...

When I look at this, I see half of the squares with narrower strips than the other half, or am I imaging it?? If so, then maybe the bottom two red/white that form the point need to have wider red sections. That would balance it out a little on the bottom. Of course, this is just a suggestion, as what you prefer is the thing to do.

You are right Jan, they ended up way too willy nilly for me to try to fix them, I tossed it and will try again and make the blocks more uniformed. It was driving me up the wall that the little squares in the middle were different sizes. I guess I should not have tried to start my first log cabin with an offselt log cabin pattern. :?

No, I wouldn't trash the whole thing, too much work done already. Just do 2 for the bottom of the heart points. Cut or recut (if your using leftover strips) all the same size. Start with a square in the middle then sew the next strip to that, cut off the extra. Work around the center with the right color to form your design. There is the option of making half of the block in the wider strips and the other half in the narrow strips. It does create a rather interesting design. You can always use the first try blocks on the back. I use left over fabrics on the back when I make charity quilts. Anything goes there.

I will try that, the center strip of blocks were the ones for some reason way larger than the rest of the block strips. I am pretty sure it had something to do with the blocks that were totally colored in the center, they appear to be about a whole inch larger! How did that happen?! I think I will rip the seams, repress it, then come back to it after Easter break. Everyone is right, I've been looking at it too much and need to come back with fresh eyes....and now thanks to you all, a plan of attack! :P

I am not exactly into design, so just take what I say with a grain of salt. But wouldn't adding some of the black fabric to the point of the heart balance the design? Right now the black makes my eye wander over the design, but nothing pulls my eye to the tip of the heart. Just a comment from a beginning quilter! :roll:

I hope you're not taking my comments as being critical as that is not intended. But the more I look at your squares here is what I'm seeing - look at those two bottom squares forming the tip of the heart, your reds do not go all the way to the edge of the block where on all the others it does. You have white going to the edge of those two. Move a couple of the other blocks to that area and see if it makes a difference to you. That will happen to log cabin blocks if you add to one side twice before the other side. Each block needs to be uniform to the previous one when you're trying to create an overall design. One of the projects in my design group was to recreate a block pattern using only log cabin blocks. I made the carpenters wheel and had the very same problem your having here. OK, now I'll keep quiet!! Good Luck.
