Still working on my 1100+ squares and ran across a piece of fabric that appears to be old/vintage. I'd like to know if there is any way to date this fabric before I start cutting into it? I'm thinking 40's/50's, but have nothing to base this on. I really don't want to cut it if it's old/vintage.

Here's a pic, hope someone can help.

That would be my guess. I remember that style of fabric from when I was a kid. A long, long, long time ago!:)

How wide is the fabric if it still has the selvedge edges? Older fabric was about 36 inches wide I think. Thats how I tell if something is older and not a reproduction. The pattern does look like its 40's or 50's but they are making alot of reproductions now so its hard to tell just from the design.

Even if it is vintage fabric, won't it be nice displayed in a quilt?

I just measured it and it's 36 x 144.

Thanks Janie

Hey Z, you're right it would make a nice quilt. My quilting skills are limited, so I might put it up for sell to see if someone more talented than me wants to make something with it.

I would guess the 40's or 50's. They would use prints like this for table cloths. They were for kitchen tables and card tables. I remember ironing table cloths similar to this print on a Mangle iron.
