How much is too much

Depends on the look you are going for, as well as the quilting/tying requirements from the batting you are using.
I think cutting the ties off a little closer will help accentuate the quilt, too :D:D:D

When I do a tied quilt, I don't use yarn ties, I do a whip stitch in a matching thread color, so it doesn't show. The quilt stays together as intended. I just don't prefer the look of tied quilts, although I do very much appreciate the amount of time spent on tying vs. quilting the quilts!
The first quilt I've tied was way overdone - I whip stitched in each cornerstone, and then sewed a 1/4" pink ribbon, tied it in a bow, then secured the bow so it wouldn't come undone. 81 of these things appeared on this quilt. It was a full sized quilt with 6" blocks. It turned out great, my 4 yr old niece loved it, and I don't ever want to do another one like it again!
