That wasn't an error -- it looks like an old telephone -- your grandmother's way of saying she contacted you again!

I'm glad it means something to you now and that you had not disposed of it. As mentioned already, some deliberately put an "error" in a quilt so as not to seem prideful or perfect...in other words to stay humble. It is very common in my PA Dutch heritage and among Amish friends.

Love your quilt!

That was my first idea too. Your GGM might have just gotten a telephone put in and wanted to brag about the event. If I, at 77, can remember when we first got electricity back on the farm, then why couldn't your GGM remember her first phone?

On the other hand, she may simply have run out of fabric for the quilt and "made do" as most did at that time.
Yes, and I, at 63 recall when we got electricity on the farm, too.But, I suspect she did the "error" block on purpose. Many did one block different, to show that God is the only one who does things perfectly.
