Oh that is going to be so awesome! What a truly wonderful memorial and I agree that the faces should be blank. Please post your progress!

Beautiful memorial. I agree, leave the faces blank but maybe a variety of colors.

You mentioned perhaps overpainting the ferns -- I did that with both ferns and flowers on a wall hanging where I could not find anything that worked and it turned out very well (just be sure to follow directions to set the paint or dye since the quilt may get washed).

They are perfect blank. Adding anything would just take away from it. Very wonderful work, by the way!

Neat idea for a quilt! I vote for leaving the faces blank. Folks will focus on all the other details of the quilt. Please do show us your progress with this!

the majority rules hands down. I will leave them blank and I have some blenders that are different shades that I can use to exhibit the different nationalities that make up our American troops. Actually I did cut the faces out of one of the blenders to begin with but I misplaced them and couldn't locate that particular fabric again.
Thanks for the input!! I will keep you posted as I get further down the road with it!!

Leave faces blank, I find that interesting. It will be a great quilt judging by what you have so far.

I would take fabric paint and shade the red stripes so that the casket flag has more definition and shape, so that you can see where the bend is in the drape and where is falls to hang down. I would leave the faces blank but I would shade the necks so that the necks and faces are not the same shade of color. What are you going to use for the uniform buttons? I think this has the potential of being a quilt show winner!
