I use a fabric filter for my daily coffee, and after many uses it has turned a very dark brown. I usually wash it by hand, but I do run it through the washing machine in a little lingerie bag from time to time. I guess the point I am trying to make is that paper filters are very strong too, and could probably be washed and still keep the coffee stained look. Some people had mentioned the issues of smell, mildew, etc. I don't think that would be a problem if the paper filters are washed first.
