They are fusible applique.

Great quilt. Love the zebra fabric sashing. My 6 year old DGD has requested a skirt out of zebra fabric and i finally found some, although not soon enough for Christmas. Will give it to her as soon as I make it. It's such a great feeling to know she appreciates the things that I make for her, although my DSIL just told us she now wants to wear jeans instead of skirts and dresses, but hopefully she will wear them all.
