If you assemble your borders independently of the quilt and then attach them at one time (perhaps mitering the corners) at least you will only have to manage the weight of the quilt one time.

Fantastic quilt a contemporary approach would be . . no borders. . . your quilt doesn't really need anything to make it pop - it does it's on its own - . . . something to consider

I agree - this is the way to go. I would never keep going around this beauty over an over, taking a chance of wavy lines. Make the border separate - then attach.

It is beautiful!!!!

BTW, the quilt is wonderful.

I agree with MYWR no border-let this speak on it's own. It's beautifully stunning.

I am not ver accomplished at quilting yet but with such a beautiful and detailed pattern I think a simple, plain border that wont distract from the main portion. Awesome quilt no matter how you finish it.

This is stunning! (And this is just one of the inspirations I was looking for when I joined this board. Good heavens!) I'm sure however you decide to finish the border, it will be wonderful. BTW, how big are the 9 patches so I can get the scale?

If you sewed the 3 borders together first and then applied to the quilt, it would mean just one trip around on the sewing machine. Your quilt top is magnificent!!

What size is the quilt top right now (before borders)? I have to ask -- I'm just in awe looking at it!

Must admit, though - if it were me, I'd probably do some piecing so you hit the 10,000 mark in pieces, just to be able to say you'd done it. This is one of those 'once in a lifetime' quilts that will be passed on to future generations, and its absolutely amazing!
