When I was hand quilting--I sewed around objects--like birds--and it was easy enough. If you found a cat online somewhere--just a simple solid body--then got it the right size--pin it onto the squares and just make tiny stitches around it--you'll be good to go!! You could use an orange thread--sooo cute!!

If you put eyes, nose, mouth and whiskers on that black block in the middle I think you will have a cat's head! :-)
