Maybe have the plain blocks in the border purple?

The pinwheels in two corners and blank blocks in the other two corners is "unsettling" to me.
Are you planning to make this a "take to the game" quilt or a "keep at home on couch" quilt or "have it be on a bed only for a very tidy person" quilt?
The colors used may be dependent on the intended purpose.

I like the white one better but yes it will get dirty. Even as much as I love purple I think the second has too much purple. If you change the size of the paws I would try to keep with 4 or 2 paws on each row, after all a tiger has 4 paws. Maybe you could find a purple tiger print, that's asking a lot but we get purple prints for the Ravens around here. Not everyone loves purple but it is for the school so maybe they could take it to the game or whatever, on the wall of their family room or game room. Principle's office would look nice, the principle needs to buy it.lol I like the pinwheels in the corners too.

Here goes try number 3. I actually like it better, b/c it is less busy which means easier piecing!! To answer some questions...b/c this is throw size I think it will probably be used at ball games or the couch and I will be paper-piecing the paws. I don't think they will be too bad if a just chain through them (although, I am not a lover of paper-piecing :( ).
Oh! Almost forgot. I have looked for paw print and tiger stripe in purple/white/black configurations. I haven't been absolutely happy with any of it, so I just decided to stay with solid colors. The paws looked like dog paws or the purple wasn't the right hue, yadda, yadda yadda.

I like this one a lot better. The pinwheels kinda blend in but I don't think they will when they are actually sewn. I think you will see that definition. I would think it would be easier to applique the paws. Steam a seamII is great and just zigzag around the outside of each piece. So much easier than paper piecing. How about purple paws on white squares with the purple stripe?

I just wanted to update all of you FABULOUS piecers/quilters. I finally finished the top. I made a few changes to the last design. I decided to completely take out the pinwheels and put the paws in the corners. The letters don't take too long as long as you are organized and chain, chain, chain. Everything is paper-pieced, including the 'W'. The paws have 30-something pieces and I estimate took about 1-1.5 hours each.
I am SO pleased with how this quilt turned out. Now I have to do the hard part (for me). I have to quilt it. I have never quilted anything this large on my machine.
Bearisgray, the purple and black striped material is PERFECT for this quilt. Thanks so much for recognizing that and selling me the material. I will also bind in the purple/black stripe.
