I just purchased a photographic backdrop stand to use when taking pictures of my big quilts. Until now I've had to lay them out on the floor and then stand on a coffee table, and the pictures were never very good because of the angle. The only alternative (for me) was to hang them over the side of the balcony (indoors), but the light was bad, the space wasn't wide enough, and the stairs showed in the pictures.

I found this stand on amazon.com. It will expand to 12' wide and 10' high. It comes in a good quality case with a carrying strap. It adjusts easily and has tripods on the uprights. I did have some trouble setting it up with a big quilt, on the grass, on a somewhat windy day (attached picture - DH is holding one pole steady) - but on a flat surface, without the wind, it will work great.

I just get them outside in good light and have two people hold them.. a lot cheaper too;)>. the quilt is lovely...

None of my friends have arms long enough to hold up a 100+ inch quilt. Even DH doesn't have arms that long.

LOL.. get them to stand on a chair .....it is super easy :) I do it all the time that way.. I used to live in a two story with a landing and we would do it from there but taking pictures on the ground or over couches is never the same as seeing the quilt like this one... and also in natural light.

My sister does not sew or quilt but mom lives with her half the year and she takes pictures of moms quilt swith half the quilt, in the dark and fuzzy and just doesn"t generally generally give a dam .;( as long as she snaps the picture she is done;(>. again having said all that the quilt is very lovely.

What a good idea, my daughter is a professional photographer. I can't tell you how many times I have put up and taken down her backdrop. I can't believe that I never thought of using it to take my photos!!!

Dunster, have you entered that quilt into a show or the fair yet? Every time I see it I start to drool and it reminds me that I need to order the pattern from you! I love the quilt stand. Thank you for sharing.

Until two years ago we had a photo studio. I have the background stands stored away....thanks for rewinding me. I'll get them out and set them up on my deck and drape the quilt over the deck rail. It should hang straight and I ca have a place to stand that I would be level with the middle of the quilt. I'm excited to get the stands out and give it a try.
