I've done the crosshatching up to about 1/4" from the embroidery. I wouldn't go over it...you want it to "pop" not recede into the background. I've also done a small stipple around it...either way turns out nice. Your work is beautiful! Can't wait to see what you decide.

I agree with everybody! Whatever you choose to do, DON"T go over the embroidery! Decide how close you have to stitch (check batting package) then go the same distance from your embroidery in each block. (Approx) Remember, your strips will be sewn down if you do 'in the ditch' so you won't have to go real close to them if you don't want too much. I would not use a contrasting thread, it will detract from your beautiful embroidery. Use the invisible thread or one that matches the background. I have found that the polyester is softer & doesn't shine as much as nylon. I use Sulky or Gutterman. (I'm not at home so I don't remember??) Just don't do too much to take away from the embroidery. It will be beautiful! :P

I've made two table runners that I machine embroidered blue work snowmen and I f/m'd around each of the designs. The background was white and I used white thread and I think it turned out pretty good. Whatever you decide to do will look stunning.
Well, sorry. That's not the picture I wanted to send. lol. And I don't know how to delete it.
