What a treasure, but I can't help to identify the quilt block. Maybe going on Quilter's cache, you might find the block, or something similar.

thanks for all the comments... I think it is gorgeous too... once I learn to quilt I hope my mom with let me quilt it. I have another one that she made that I believe is Trip around the world... I will take pics and post it too...

OH MY Those are gorgeous. I would have them quilted for your mother so she can enjoy them and you can then enjoy them too.
I have one of my Grandmother's quilt that we had quilted just recently... It currently graces the bed in the guest room. I am replicating it so that the other bed will match.

Maybe your Mom would allow you to quilt it now. It would help to keep the threads from ravelling and preserve it better for future generations. What a beauty!! All our old heirloom quilts were used and used and used until they no longer exist... :?

Any and all quilts that my Great-grandparents had were snagged by just one of my Mom's aunts back East. And she wasn't sharing. And any that my grandmother may have had or made were stolen when she died by one of my cousins.
I'm sharing my quilts with family and friends now, while I can still designate where they're going!!
