Is papaw the same as Great Grandpa? I am from the North and not familiar with the term papaw...

My dad called his father pappy. It is a term that people from West Virginia use. I am sure other southern people have heard this name of papaw all thier lives. It was my dad's dad. I think it is short for pap's paw. I don't know really. So it was my grandfather's quilt. My grandmother was called Mamaw to us while she was alive. My dad was a great student and had to keep his grades up to a high standard. He was a page in the senate and in the CC Camps when he was young.

I on the other hand am called Memaw by my grandchildren and my hubby is Pepaw. LOL! I know, but it is oh so endearing to hear them say it.

Thank you all for such a nice thread of comments. I love this old quilt and will take good care while I have it.

I think your brother knew when he gave it back to you that you would take care of it. It meant more to you and evidently you mean more to him. I think that is wonderful to show you so much love. Your one lucky person. Enjoy the memories.

That's wonderful that you know some of the story! I have some old quilts--but I don't know who in my family made them.
