Patriotic Quilt for Dad's 90th Birthday
Here is a quilt that is very near and dear to my heart and very personal to me!! It is entirely my own design starting with the center square and working outwards.. maybe not an approved method but it worked well for me. I had the design in my head and kept building it outward. It's not fancy, or very difficult but every single inch had to be just perfect for me. I spent alot of time making sure every stage of this quilt was exactly square as I added the next fabric. I am very very proud to say it's about as perfect as I can get it being so new to piecing. My binding is coming along,... 3 out of 4 corners are nearly perfect mitres. The 4th corner... well I'm sure some of you know that somethings don't come out perfect no matter how many times you restitch. But.... I'm ok with it... until I get better!! ;-)
I completed the quilt by embroidering not one but 2 special labels and stitched them on the back.
My darling dad has just turned 90 and we are having a big family celebration. Dad has Alzheimers and pretty much lives back in WWII and his days at home when he was a boy. He seems more in touch with those days than what is happening at the moment. I accept that this is how is life is now, I love him no matter what condition his mind is in!
Dad has always been so proud of his Military Service that I thought this might be a way to really touch his heart and mind. What could be better than some patriotic fabrics to salute his time in the Military. I think he might respond well, but if he doesn't, it doesn't matter to me, because this project was very important to me to honor something that means so much to him.
So without further explanations.... here is my special quilt to my darlin' dad.

What a touching way to honor your dad's birthday and his service to our country. You must know in your heart that he will love it even tho he may not be able to tell you. Best wishes to your dad on his 90th birthday.

What a outstanding and beautiful quilt and the label is nice. My son is Active Duty Navy and I am designing him a quilt with navy fabric (United We Stand) from Robert Kaufman and The People's House 24" Panel of Americana from Bolts in the Bathtub. I am including a picture of Great Lakes Naval Training Station, IL where he did his bootcamp (now and intstructor there) and the three ships he served on.
