That is one of the first things I noticed as I was piecing it together...the stripes remind me of rank stripes on military uniforms. My hubby was in the Army for 9 years. My sister and one of my brothers are currently serving. My dad, grandfather and several uncles also served. Wow..... I never realized how much military there is in my family until I started listing them!

Your table runner is reall cool! What a good idea about the flannel. Enjoy your family outing and I am sure your relative and everyone else is gonna LOVE that tablerunner!!
