I was visiting my dad & step-mom in August and just HAD to make this for their large round table they have. She's very much in to patriotic decor.

I was quite nervous when I started because of using the, what I call, half-moon pieces on the outer edges and working with a 1-1/2" square. But it was easier than I thought.
I found the basic concept (round outer edges) in a magazine from 1997 and decided it was something I could use to make a new style.

I'm still a newbie in quilting, but I'd like to start working with smaller pieces rather than the larger 4" pieces.

The topper is 20" diameter, that's was what I had to go with. However, now that I understand more of the concepts of sizing, I'm sure I could make it smaller if I wanted.

I hear a lot of compliments...what about some criticism. I know my work is new, and I'd really like to hear what could have made it better. I've only made oval placemats and a few toppers. If you do a search for my name, you'll see the other ones I made in June titled More Wedding Gifts.

Any ideas? I'm open to all kinds of criticism (very open minded)

I don't have any criticism on your table topper. It is beautiful.

Suggestion: if you want to get more creative you could try "fussy" cutting for your center. But it is beautiful just as it is. I have a round table just the right size for it :D

I decided I didn't like the white threads going through the center block.
I tried, using my computer program, to add a center piece of the flag material appliqued in the center of the blue block, but it didn't look right. Even tried a white fabric, but it didn't look right either.
So....I removed the white threads, starting at the very center. Pulled the top threads to the bottom, knotted them together, and weaved them in between the 2 layers to hide them.
Then sewed the center block in black thread instead.
    I like it much better.

This is a lovely accent for your table!

Don't worry about the size of your squares. 4" is a very nice place to start. Once you're comfortable with your machine and your hands on that size, you can (and will) work your way down very naturally.

Congratuations on a job well done!
