    Large pattern designs and in different colors. So many times I've seen things (quilts, afghans, whatever) and I want one, but the colors aren't what I like. So many of the same design, but in different colors is my suggestion.

    different variations of split rail - you could alternate solid blocks with rail blocks

    I saw a pattern for endless stairs on about.com It looks quick and easy. Just sew 2 strips together and cut into squares.
