Wow! I didn't think I was ever going to complete this topper. I took a class thru one of the guilds I belong to on the 30* ruler and making fans. We were to cut our material in strips and then sew 4 strips together and then cut with the 30* ruler and put the pieces back together. Most did it in Fan shapes. I did not care how the material I picked looked in the fan shapes( it was pretty blah and just wasn't working for me) so almost gave up the whole idea. Then I got to thinking about how they would look in individual table toppers as stars, once I started putting the stars together, I moved them so they were all attatched together. Now I really like how it turned out. I finally got it loaded and quilted and just love it!
(Just goes to show sometimes going off the beaten path and playing is better.) |
This is beautiful and very clever. Nice job.

It's a beautiful topper in a unique shape. Great job and glad that you didn't give up.
I'm so glad you continued on it. I have the 60* ruler and have done a few things with it, but nothing like this. Your table topper came out excellent. Love the star shapes in it in different colors and love the not square/round shape!

You did a wonderful job.. its beautiful. Glad you played around with it... :) Love the colors too...
Very nice! How big is it? I really like your colors and you did a great job on the binding!
WOW, that is a gorgeous topper.
very nice
That is so cool
Beautiful job.
Very unique...I love it!

This looks awesome. It really has some unique optical illusion stuff going on as well. My eye was immediatly caught by the hexagons surrounding the center star and how they have a 3-d look to them. Love the shape of it too. Great job!
I like it very much. The shape is so differant. Good job.
That is very nice...so you don't really have a pattern for that? I like your fabrics, too!
beautiful!!
Wow, pretty clever.
That is just stunning!
I really really wish that my quilt stores or guild would have classes like that. I would be so there. Our stores are lacking in that department!! |
Thank you everyone for your kind comments.
This was a free class our guild put on that one of the gals offered to do for us. A lot of them turned out differently. Her intent was to show us how to use the regular ruler to cut our 30* angles. Pretty neat to learn. I haven't taken many classes because the prices are usually to high for me at LQS In fact this is my 2nd class ever. It's wonderful when guilds are able to have different people voluteer to do a class, here's hoping yours does soon.

Oh, I love that! I may just have to make one in Christmas colors.
Our local guild doesn't do much at all... and it's a really big guild. It's disappointing to see that they don't offer classes. I went to one meeting and was less than impressed... so I didn't join. If they had classes, free or even for a small fee, I would be all over it. I know a few others that feel the same way as well. I don't want to go and start my own guild though. I don't want to step on anyone's feet if you know what I mean! But then.... It would be nice... I'll have to call around and see if I can get one started at one of the local churches...

Hers was a fan shape. Then sewed them together. It took me about three weeks to decide on my design( I had kept trying the fans and no matter how I did them I did not care for how it looked) I had thrown it all in a pile and in fact was going to get rid of it when one last time I took it out sat on the floor and wondered how making just single star table toppers would look.(I could give them as Christmas gifts) Well, then one thing led to another and I happened to scooch them together and kind of liked how they were looking then... walaa..... . When I quilted it I decided I wanted the stars to poof out, so on the background pieces I did a Micro meander over them to knock them down, which made the stars stand out more. It probably could of used a border but decided the fabrics I had for it were busy enough so just added the brown plain binding. These fabrics were actually from our Walmart part of their monthly grouping. I think a person could make a thousand and they would never turn out the same. |
I'm glad that you didn't throw them away! I definitely need to make something along that line now... stinkers... another project added to my to do list.. thanks.

Here are a couple of the other fan designs I had come up with, that I really didn't care for. There are about a thousand other designs you could move them into, Very versatile. I would suggest if doing one, think outside the "fan shape". I think that is where I got stuck with a design.

What a great topper! I love the different shape!

Interesting pattern. You did an excellent job!
Glad you persevered - it came out great.

Wow! I love it! I made a wall hanging for my nephew a while back using pretty much the same technigue and it looked just like a maze and it was sure pretty. I made a lap quilt with the same pattern and it turned out nice and that was before I got a pattern. I have no idea where I put my pattern. I have a lot of colors of scrap fabrics and small pieces so I'm one going to have to play with them and maybe I can come up with some thing like that topper. Great job! Huggies, Fay
