I wish I could "practice" tat well.

And to MommaGus, that is a great idea.

seasaw2mch 07-20-2010 05:14 PM

OK I have a very stupid question. Why can't you quilt from the back instead of the front since the pattern on the front doesn't always match what the blocks are anyway?

Is it me? or am I just not getting the whole picture here? And to answer your question, No I have never done machine quilting nor have I done hand quilting, just hand tied quilts so far but I wanting to learn and I have to teach myself since I have no one the help me with that.

And yes I love your practice quilt. I just hope mine is half as good as yours.

SandyMac 07-20-2010 05:25 PM

Yoluvtaquilt 07-20-2010 05:57 PM

When doing freestye free motion sewing, do you do onw block at a time and then move to the next and so on and so on. Then to the binding??? I was just wondering, this seems really fascinating to me.

It depends what I'm working on. The One Block Wonder quilts I've done are all quilted from the back, usually just a meander, (except the borders which I like to quilt reflecting the theme of the fabric), with a very fine thread, so as not to detract from the effect of the hexagons.
On this quilt I worked each 16in block separately but without a break, but the borders are done in one round too. On traditionally pieced quilts I like to try and free motion to "suit" the fabric and pieced design.

Not necessarily, all depends on the quilt design - see my reply to Seasaw2mch above.

The pattern is in the book "Jelly Roll Quilts" by Pam Lintott, and is called Spiral Strips.

nwm50 07-21-2010 05:05 AM

Whoa is all i could say while scrolling thru your pic. Practice peice?...well golly gee just mail it to me and it's a prize! I love the colors as well as your FMQ !

grann of 6 07-21-2010 05:17 AM

I have that book. I loved the pic in the book, but thought it looked so complicated. I may have to try that one. And I just got a disc of machine quilting by John Deer; has feathers, hearts, all the usual hand quilting designs, but done on the embroidery machine. Now I know what I am going to do with my jelly rolls and the disc. I use my square quilts for table covers. My grandkids are so careful when they eat so as not to spill. They wash up so nice, but I don't tell them that.

Bustertruster 07-21-2010 06:03 AM

Thats some mighty fine quilting.

Sadheart 07-21-2010 06:23 AM

omak 07-21-2010 12:20 PM

Excellent! I am so proud of you because your success will encourage many others!
You have done a fine job and you are quite more experimental than I have ever been able to be. I would be jealous, but I just actually celebrate every one on this board who attempts something new and succeeds.
Good job! <wave>

Love it!

The pattern I used is "Spiral Strips" from the Jelly Roll Quilts book, by Pam and Nicky Lintott. Their patterns are really good, very easy, and there is never any waste.

Patched 11-13-2010 07:42 AM

Love your quilt. What is the pattern?
