My best friend went to Goodwill or St. Vincent's (I can't remember which). She found this ratty old quilt -- at least she ThOUGHT it was ratty until she washed it. She thinks it's one of those you get from the store...but I really don't think so -- what do you think?

I thought all of you might enjoy seeing the quilt and the close up of the blocks.

Prism99 05-09-2010 08:08 PM

Wow! That's all I can say!

littlehud 05-09-2010 08:21 PM

Wow, that looks hand quilted. I don't think that came from a store. What a find.

DebraK 05-09-2010 08:29 PM

SCORE!

Pickles 05-09-2010 08:38 PM

Really pretty

CraftyGirlCreations 05-09-2010 09:38 PM

oh my! what a great find!!

earthwalker 05-09-2010 09:44 PM

I don't think this is mass produced, from the pics you provided it looks handmade. Often mass produced "quilts" have little variation in fabric (wholecloth - usually with a print) they are also very heavily machine quilted - I am not hugely into florals (though looking at my stash you'd think so) but, this is a real beauty. Excellent find and thanks for posting.

Born2Sew 05-09-2010 09:59 PM

The fabrics appear to be more vintage type in it I think.
It doesn't appear 'store bought' to me. Great find!

KiwiQuilter 05-09-2010 10:47 PM

It looks hand quilted to me. What an incredible find.

wvdek 05-09-2010 11:06 PM

Whatever it is, it is a nice comfy looking one.

That's what counts if you are going to use it. We all get so hung up. I like it!

rootyr 05-10-2010 02:04 AM

Great find!

raptureready 05-10-2010 02:29 AM

You can usually tell by the quilting stitches if it's one of the quilts that are handmade yet mass produced in China that you can buy at almost any flea market. If the quilting stitches are almost 1/4" then it most likely is. But either way it's pretty and well worth what she paid. The stitches in the picture don't look nearly that big.

CarrieAnne 05-10-2010 04:04 AM

Wow, its really beautiful! I think it looks Hand made too!

Charlee 05-10-2010 04:16 AM

I don't think it's Chinese...the handquilting on those is usually large stitch, and minimal. This one has some echo quilting. It's also looking fussy cut to me...factories don't have time to fussy cut...

Look really close around the edges...if it's a commercial quilt you should be able to find where the tag was removed.

Maride 05-10-2010 04:43 AM

The one way to tell is by looking at the quilting stitches. Quilts made in China can be hand quilted, even echo quilted but you can follow a thread to the beginning. If the knot is on the top of the quilt, it is mass produced. They don't take that first tug to bury the knot into the layers.

Great find!

MNQuilter 05-10-2010 05:11 AM

Also, look at the backing. I know many of us use muslin on backing but the chinese made ones are almost exclusively muslin backed. I think the stitches look too small to be mass produced.

amandasgramma 05-10-2010 06:27 AM

Good points....I'll let her know and see if she can figure out anything. I, too, love it. Told her she could leave it in her will for me.

dkabasketlady 05-10-2010 07:48 AM

I'd say this is the real deal. What a find!!

Ditter43 05-10-2010 07:57 AM

I don't see the echo quilting you are seeing. Bad eyes?? LOL

Nanjun 05-11-2010 03:41 AM

How could anyone give that quilt to good will? It is beautiful

JoyjoyMarie 05-11-2010 04:19 AM

I have picked up a couple quilts that are of this nature- they are fairly well designed and hand stitched and they are made in China. I got one at the Goodwill store, and one at the local dept store after xmas sale. They are both nice quilts and one tip off is the hand quilting which is not very complex or close. My Christmas one is starting to have a few quilting stitches come out after a few washings, but i very much like the design and fabrics. whereever it came from, the price is right!!

Sheree from Chicago 05-11-2010 07:13 AM

Makes me want to go treasure hunting!

I agree the "handmade" ones from the store have very large stitching, they can be pretty, but won't hold up nearly as well as a real handquilted one. Still a bargain at that price no matter what.

Sorry it took so long to get an answer...girlfriend just replied and said they're embroidered.

I think she's/he's talking about the square quilting within the square patch

WOW!!! What a treasure!!! I think it is handmade too :D:D:D

MaryAnna 05-11-2010 03:52 PM

my family has 7 hand made chinese quilts used for beach blankets and cat beds. every one has a coordinating print on the back, cheap ones and better ones. i guess the quality of the stitching is one clue, but it does look like one of the better chinese ones. one hint is that deep ruffle. i don't think that diminishes the value, though. someone made a beautiful hand-made quilt and your friend hit the jackpot.
