This WIP has come to a glorious end. Love the borders and you should be so happy with this spectacular display of color and design. Thank you so much for sharing. Just think that it’s the best.

What is "new" to me is how you did the scraps within the keys. I've done piano keys before, but never as a scrappy border, but never have seen scrappy within the scrappy! :) Thanks for sharing as I'll be "stealing" that idea for sure! :)

Great work..DH should love curling up in it.

Hmmm - curves - I agree - I like curves when the blocks are full of straight lines. Maybe feathers? It sort of depends on how comfortable you feel with your machine quilting. Long, graceful curves along the dark and light diagonal lines would look nice. You could space them close together like cross-hatching - or leave them as wide apart as your batting recommends.

Joanne, would you believe I've never machine quilted anything?? I'm a little scared to start on this one, though I have to say that as I was pressing all those seams, the thought did occur to me, "huh. Quilting this should be interesting..." I'll have to think that one over, I guess. Especially since my only machine is my old antique Singer.

Could you explain a little more about your cross-hatching curvy lines idea? I'm trying to visualize it. Feather curves? Or just lines?

Oh, nice, glad you like it! A big part of my reason for making the piano keys scrappy was because I had a lot of strips left over that I'd cut when I was making the blocks. I just sewed the scraps into longer strips- and also cut long strips from other fabric to add to them- then cut those long strips into the 9 1/2" pieces I needed for the borders.

Thank you! I was planning to hand quilt, that's all I've ever done, though all those seams are a little scary. I like the idea of circles!

Oh I definitely do! I was thinking a slick way would be to do them like those lasagna jelly roll quilts and keep stitching and cutting til you are down to the border width you want.

Long sweeping lines - much easier. That's what I did on a LC several years ago. I just search for a picture with no luck.

Excellent work

C.quilts 07-04-2011 04:01 AM

It' is a gorgeous quilt. As far a quilting it goes. Don't get too fancy. The top is very busy and you won't see it. A curvy cross hatching would work. Even just a simple meandering (stipple) in the center would work. I would probably to stitch in the ditch in the piano keys.

Though I started it about 10 years ago (give or a take a year!), I actually cranked out 90% of this in the last 2 and a half weeks.

Now I'm looking for ideas for quilting design. I've had some ideas- I know I don't want straight lines, definitely want curvy quilting of some sort- but nothing that I can settle on. Would be thankful for some suggestions! : )

If it were mine, I'd do a meandering stitch that won't detract from the beautiful combination of fabric.

meemersmom 07-04-2011 04:20 AM

Very nice. Now that you see how nice it's come out, aren't you sorry you waited so long? How about a fleur-de-lis design in each of the triangles. Or, loops and hearts (since for your husband bday/anniversary) would be sweet. Thanks for sharing.

QweenBee 07-04-2011 04:23 AM

Just gorgous!! So well worth the wait, I'd say!!!  :D

quiltymom 07-04-2011 04:36 AM

love it!!!

Limey 07-04-2011 04:37 AM

Wonderful quilt! The quilting won't show up much against all the colors so a simple curvy all-over pattern might be your best bet.

Sewfine 07-04-2011 04:44 AM

In the corners you can put something unique in reference to his hobby. Just a beginner.

It's beautiful! You can do an image search on Google for Log Cabin Quilts and see some of the ways to quilt it. There are also many on this board.

krob 07-04-2011 05:27 AM

Does not matter how long---now was when it was supposed to be born!!! So pretty!

sandpat 07-04-2011 06:50 AM

Oh, its gorgeous! I love feathers, so I would use some type of large feather square design if it were mine....especially since I do mine on my DSM..not a LA. I'm sure there are some beautiful feather pantos out there is you LA.

quiltingnonie 07-04-2011 06:51 AM

Gotta LOVE log cabins - I never tire of looking at them. I particularly like your block layout, with dark centers/light centers alternating.

daisydebby 07-04-2011 08:18 AM

Wow, your LC is one of the best scrappies I've ever seen. I absolutely LOVE IT:) So inspirational...thanks.

I think quilting it with a babtist fan would be pretty or maybe a paisley pattern.
